The beanie hat features a schematic drawing of CERN’s four main accelerators and their interconnections.
Before reaching the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), particles are accelerated successively in the LINAC, the PS booster, the Proton Synchrotron (PS) and the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS).
Each new accelerator increases the speed of the particles, but, more importantly, gives more energy to the particles. The particles collide in the LHC and, thanks to the famous E = mc2 formula, their energy spontaneously transforms into mass, forming new particles that are studied in the four giant detectors.
The accelerators are controlled by operators 24 hours a day from the CERN Control Centre.
